On Friday, August 4, the Valenzuela City government, in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), introduced the “Valenzuela Reading Camp 2023.” This initiative aims to elevate the reading comprehension abilities of students enrolled in 42 public elementary schools across the city. Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja spearheaded the program’s launch at Gen. T. De Leon Elementary School.
DepEd’s National Learning Camp, mandated by DepEd Order No. 014 of 2023, serves as a voluntary learning recovery program offered annually at the end of each school year. The program’s primary objective is to tackle existing reading deficiencies among learners at both elementary and secondary levels while fostering a deep-seated passion for reading.
The Reading Camp 2023 spans five weeks and serves as a guide and support for teachers tasked with assisting students who encounter challenges, particularly in reading. Vice Mayor Borja emphasizes the program’s goal of minimizing the number of learners grappling with reading difficulties and empowering them to become proficient, independent readers. Furthermore, Borja encourages active parental involvement in the program to bolster their children’s learning experiences.
The Valenzuela City government and DepEd launched the Valenzuela Reading Camp 2023 to ensure that no child within the city lags in their educational journey. The local government commits to providing unwavering support to students, recognizing the pivotal role of education in their overall development.
To prepare for Reading Camp 2023, 64 selected teachers and 132 volunteers underwent comprehensive training known as the “Teaching Camp.” Facilitated by the Synergeia Foundation, this training equips educators and their assistants with the requisite knowledge and skills to employ effective teaching methodologies. By enhancing teachers’ pedagogical competencies, the program endeavors to optimize students’ learning experience.
Mayoress Tiffany Gatchalian and her children Tara and Liam engaged students through a captivating storytelling session during the launch event. This interactive approach not only fosters a love for reading but also cultivates a vibrant learning environment conducive to student participation and engagement.
Additionally, the organizers conducted a question-and-answer segment to stimulate students’ critical thinking skills. The family of Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian rewarded those who provided correct answers with P500 gift certificates. These initiatives aim to incentivize active participation and reinforce the importance of literacy among students.
The Valenzuela Reading Camp 2023 will run from August 8 to 22 and consist of 10 half-day sessions. To encourage students’ active involvement, the city government has announced that participants who complete all sessions will receive incentives such as gift certificates. These incentives serve as tangible rewards for students’ dedication and commitment to enhancing their reading skills.
The Valenzuela Reading Camp has been an integral component of the city’s educational landscape since its inception in May 2014. Over the past six years, the program has positively impacted the lives of 85,059 students, fostering a culture of literacy and lifelong learning within the community. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Valenzuela City government remains steadfast in its commitment to providing quality education and empowering future generations through initiatives such as the Reading Camp 2023.
