Screen Time Concerns – Effects on Filipino Children

The excessive use of cell phones among Filipino children has become a pressing concern and is detrimental to their health and well-being. In the Philippines, where screen time has become ingrained in children’s lives, adherence to national guidelines for screen time is worryingly low. These guidelines recommend limited screen time for different age groups to mitigate the negative impact of prolonged screen exposure. However, studies indicate that a significant portion of Filipino children exceed these recommendations, spending excessive amounts of time on digital devices.

Recent events have shed light on the potential dangers of excessive cell phone use, adding to the urgency of addressing this issue. At Bagong Silangan Elementary School, regular library clients participated in an enlightening activity titled “Ang Batang Mahilig Mag-cellphone: A film-showing,” held at QCPL-Bagong Silangan Branch on March 26, 2024. Through this event, students gained valuable insights into the potential health hazards of excessive cell phone use. They learned that prolonged screen time can lead to serious health issues, including but not limited to weight problems, cognitive delays, and emotional disturbances.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, the situation worsened as families reported increased screen time, particularly in TV and digital device usage. Such prolonged exposure to screens during critical developmental stages can exacerbate the adverse effects on children’s health and well-being. Research suggests that excessive screen time correlates with a myriad of issues, ranging from physical health concerns like obesity to psychological problems like anxiety and depression.

Practitioners play a pivotal role in addressing this issue by supporting families to minimize excessive screen time. Encouraging adherence to national guidelines, promoting collaborative efforts between organizations, and advocating for balanced daily activities are essential strategies. Parents can also limit their screen time, engage in co-participation with their children, and establish clear rules regarding screen use to create a healthier digital environment.

In conclusion, while screens have become an integral part of modern life, it’s crucial to recognize and address the risks associated with excessive screen time, particularly among Filipino children. By raising awareness, providing support, and fostering a balanced lifestyle, practitioners and parents can work together to safeguard the health and well-being of the younger generation in the digital age.
