April holds special significance as Literacy Month, designated by Proclamation 968 signed by former President Benigno Aquino 3rd in 2015. This proclamation highlights literacy’s importance and commemorates Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar Day and notable literary figures’ anniversaries like Emilio Jacinto, Paciano Rizal, Nick Joaquin, Edith Tiempo, and Bienvenido Lumbera. It serves as a reminder of their invaluable contributions to Philippine literature, enriching the nation’s cultural tapestry.
This year’s Literacy Month focuses on “Literature and Peace,” emphasizing literature’s profound connection to harmony and understanding. It pays tribute to esteemed writers and scholars in Philippine literature, promoting the rich history and cultural heritage of Philippine literature, particularly to contemporary Filipinos and the younger generation. Through various activities and initiatives, Literacy Month aims to deepen appreciation for literature while fostering peace and unity within society.
Literacy Month also spotlights emerging talents like Andrew Jalbuena Pasaporte, a rising Pinoy middle-grade author. Pasaporte’s recent work explores Philippine folklore, offering modern perspectives on traditional tales. His latest book innovatively interprets Philippine urban legends, drawing attention for its fresh approach. Notably, Pasaporte made a guest appearance at Otro Cinco on April 19, 2024, where he discussed his book and highlighted the importance of reimagining folklore for contemporary audiences.
“We must spread literary works so that they reach our countrymen and share the message of peace.” This is the remarks of KWF Chairman Dr. Arthur Casanova during a press briefing in Fort Santiago. he underscored the literature’s potential as an instrument for peace amidst diverse narratives.
The celebration of NLM extends beyond discussions to include various activities and events nationwide. In line with this year’s theme, “Literature and Peace,” a platform for creative expression and cultural exchange is provided by NLM 2024. All the activities conducted highlighted that peace is not merely a destination but a way of life.
