In observance of National Literature Month last April, SM Supermalls‘ Book Nook, a vibrant community and learning hub, orchestrated dynamic events tailored for literature enthusiasts of all ages. These events exemplified SM’s steadfast commitment to nurturing literary endeavors.
Kicking off the month-long festivities, SM Cares and Book Nook commenced with the commemoration of International Children’s Book Day on April 2 in collaboration with the Vibal Foundation, a pivotal organizer for the local segment of the celebration. The occasion featured an intimate storytelling session catered to students from various schools to enhance reading literacy in the Philippines.
Subsequently, on April 13, Nina Daza-Puyat, daughter of culinary luminary Nora Daza, took the stage for another captivating storytelling session, enthralling the audience with spellbinding renditions from her renowned works, such as “Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” and “The Forlorn Rice Cooker.”
April 14 witnessed lifestyle journalist and author Stephanie Zubiri joining forces with award-winning visual artist Vico Cham to introduce “Chalky The Chameleon,” a literary piece championing diversity and inclusivity. This unveiling transpired during the A Spectrum of Colors event in collaboration with Best Buddies Event, an initiative aimed at spotlighting World Autism Awareness Month, also observed in April, while promoting reading literacy in the Philippines.
Moreover, on April 19, expert stylist and author KC Leyco Mempin, widely known as Miss Kayce, unveiled the second edition of her book “Always Be Chic.” This edition, crafted to streamline the sartorial journey for individuals at every stage of life, emphasizes the ecological footprint of sustainable fashion. It delves into the significance of mindful consumption while furnishing pragmatic suggestions for integrating sustainability into one’s style.
Established initially by SM Supermalls as an accessible and complimentary library, Book Nook aspires to cultivate a community where bibliophiles of all generations can exchange their ardor for literature among kindred spirits. It serves as a nexus where visitors can peruse literary works and contribute to the library’s perpetual expansion by donating their books, thereby enriching the community’s literary landscape.
As a conduit of human expression, literature furnishes us with insights into history, culture, and ethics, facilitating a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world. We acknowledge its pivotal role in society, so we champion initiatives such as this, remarked Ms. Shereen Sy, Founder of Book Nook.
Through its commemoration of National Literature Month, SM endeavors to underscore its advocacy for literature, a facet ingrained within its ongoing efforts to foster education and its pivotal role in nation-building. Thus, SM aims to enhance reading literacy in the Philippines.
