Librarians’ Empowerment Forum Unveils Filipino Literary Treasures

The Philippine Library Association, Inc. (PLAI), in conjunction with the Academic Bookseller Association of the Philippines, orchestrates a vibrant forum at the Philippine Book Festival hosted by the National Book Development Board – Philippines. The event, dubbed “Pages of Progress: Empowering Filipino Futures through Literacy and Innovation,” beckons librarians and book enthusiasts alike. Attendees must secure their spots by registering at bit.ly/ForumOnPagesOfProgress and remitting the minimal Php 200.00 registration fee to PLAI’s PNB Bank account, 168-010-042-835. PLAI assures an immersive experience with the enchanting array of Filipiniana Books showcased at the festival.

Furthermore, The Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (formerly known as the Philippine Library Association) remains the sole nationally accredited professional organization for librarians in the Philippines, serving as the central hub for all library groups nationwide.

History of PLAI

PLAI’s illustrious journey began on October 22, 1923, when six visionary librarians, beneficiaries of government scholarships for library science studies in the United States, laid its foundation. Under the leadership of Dr. Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera as President, PLAI embarked on its mission. On October 8, 1925, PLAI formally registered as a non-stock, nonprofit corporation. In a pivotal moment on May 5, 1989, PLAI rebranded itself, aligning with the accreditation requirements of the Professional Regulation Commission. The passage of RA 6966 in 1990 marked a significant milestone, cementing PLAI’s status as the premier organization for professional librarians in the Philippines. Even after the expiration of its corporate charter in late November 2008, PLAI resurged, reincorporating under updated Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
