Born and raised in Barangay Concepcion, Jennie Arado’s passion for literature began early. A creative writing graduate from the University of the Philippines Mindanao, she pursued a career in journalism before transitioning to her dream of owning a bookshop. Arado’s journey into the literary world included winning the grand prize at the South Cotabato Children’s Story Writing Workshop in 2018, with her Hiligaynon children’s storybook “Dako nga Yahong sang Batchoy,” published by Aklat Alamid.

A Cozy Nook for Literary Enthusiasts

Nestled in the Romil Building along Zulueta Street, Alitaptap Bookshop offers a tranquil haven for book lovers and curious passersby. The shop features a cozy reading corner, a mini coffee bar, and a pastry display. It creates a perfect environment for readers to immerse themselves in a good book while enjoying coffee and a delectable pastry.

With around 400 book titles, including children’s books from local publishers like Kahel Press, Tahanan Books, and Adarna House, Alitaptap Bookshop stands out as a beacon for promoting reading literacy. The shop’s name, firefly, symbolizes the desire to reignite a love for reading in the community.

Supporting Local Initiatives

In addition to its literary mission, Alitaptap Bookshop supports local causes. A portion of the sales goes to Pet Avenue, a rescue center for abandoned and sick cats and dogs in Davao and Tacurong. The bookshop also features a collaboration with AOC (Ace of Cups) Coffee, which sources its beans from small producers in Tboli, South Cotabato, and Sunsbaked, offering home-baked pastries.

A Dream Realized

Jennie Arado’s journey from journalist to bookshop owner reflects her enduring passion for literature. After leaving her newspaper job in 2022, she transitioned to online-based work, allowing her to travel and reconnect with her hometown. The idea for Alitaptap Bookshop took shape during a mentoring session at the Sox Writing Workshop in General Santos City, where she realized the need for a shared space for local artists and writers.

With the support of family and friends, Arado transformed her long-time dream into reality. She reached out to publishing houses, authors, and writers she had met through various literary events, ensuring a diverse and exciting selection of books for Alitaptap Bookshop.
